cleared their schedule for debate rehearsals. the president's practicing right now at nevada. mitt romney's resuming his practice sessions after a welcoming rally tonight in denver. both sides downplaying expectations. but cnn's chief political correspondent candy crowley who's moderating, by the way, the second presidential debate, noticed one high-profile exception. >> reporter: apparently romney supporter and republican governor chris christie didn't get the memo. s.o.p. for predebate chatter is to lower expectations for your guy by raising expectations for the other guy, like this -- >> president obama's a very gifted speaker. the man's been on the national stage for many years. he's an experienced debater. >> reporter: because this is a bipartisanly accepted strategy, like this -- >> we've expected all along that governor romney will have a good night. he's prepared more than any candidate in history, showing himself to be a very good debater. >> reporter: since you are supporting romney, you are supporting him, right? then you also need to lower the stakes for wednesday's first of t
since august." now, they're right debates are about moments but ain an amusin image. mitt romney sitting in a room peppering them with zingers. i would like to be on the wall hearing that. >> not about zingers, serious substantive policy. and in "the washington post" showing a virtual dead heat with the president and mitt romney. obama with a slight edge. 49-47%. but also in this survey, it delves down into the expectations game for this debate. what can you tell me about those numbers, peter? >> reporter: despite what chris christie said, and that is sort of another mixed message coming out of the romney campaign, romney is winning the expectations game if you look at the polls. more likely to win the debate, president obama 55%. mitt romney just 31% of likely voters expect him to win the debate. that's a good place to be for him going in there, but like you said, there's a lot of stuff in this poll. sort of mirrors what we've seen in a lot of recent national and state polls. president obama has advantages on a range of issues, however, one thing tilting in romney the direction. interes
st. "starting point" begins right now. >>> good morning, welcome everybody. our starting point this morning, crunch time in the race for the white house. just two days remain before president obama and mitt romney square off in denver for the first of three critical debates. president's being prepped in nevada today. and the gop challenger has some ground to make up because a brand-new "washington post"/abc news poll this morning has the president leading by two percentage points among likely voters. it's not unusual for candidates to try to lower expectations in the days leading up to dedebate. republicans have been playing up the president's eloquence, ever since last week. but it seems somebody forgot to tell new jersey governor chris christie, because he was setting the bar high for mr. romney. listen. >> he's going to come in wednesday night, lay out his vision for america, he's going to contrast what his view is with what the president's record is, the president's view for the future and this whole race is going to be turned upside down come thursday morning. >> upside do
a little here. >> go right ahead. [laughter] >> a day or two before governor romney made his decision about his running mate, i was talking to another pollster. runs the democracy corps. they have been trying to use the ryan plan to beat republican members of congress over the head. like you said, nobody knew who paul ryan was. as we were getting off the phone, i said, i will give you this. i do not think governor romney is going to pick paul ryan. but if he does, we will have another conversation. it strikes me that democrats have not effectively made medicare and the rhine plan -- the ryan plan, i have seen the polling and how it moves people. i have not seen them in flicked a lot of bodily damage on republicans on the ryan plan, on medicare, so far. am i missing something? has it had a meaningful effect or not? >> the quick answer would be, we will find out in 33 days. >> apparently, we are going to find out in 33 days. [laughter] the first observation i make is that there is this presumption in the press, boy, paul ryan, what a risky mistake he was. test polls show that paul ryan genera
since august. >> yeah. that's the word on the street. the romney campaign won't go there, carol. all they're going to say is, guess what? he's spending a lot of time getting ready. you're right. i don't have any sound fm mitt romney like dan had from the president. why? he hasn't done an event in a while. mitt romney, carol, he jumps on a plane today, goes out to colorado. he's got a campaign rally there tonight. but after that basically hunkers down. you mentioned john kerry, of course, you just heard from dan lothian john kerry is playing mitt romney. take a listen to john mccain. he spoke with candy crowley yesterday on "state of the union." john mccain the last man to debate president obama. >> i think both are excellent in their own way. i think you could argue that mitt has had a lot more recent experience. obviously. but also, candy, part of it depends on who's moderating. >> the man's been on the national stage for many years. he's an experienced debate per. this is mitt's first time on this kind of stage. >> paul ryan on the sunday talk shows. the running mate talking down e
specifically, how important is the first debate? >> each of these debates is an opportunity for romney to try to shake up the race. if you look at the polling in pretty much every swing state right now, there are a couple of exceptions, missouri being one of them. almost every swing state thement opened up a significant lead outside the margin of error in most cases. if tea lex were to be held today, it would be a shock if mitt romney were to win. he has to find a way to shake up that narrative. >> one of the things we've seen in the polls is older voters moving more in the direction towards president obama, and one of the key issues in this campaign has been medicare which has really been brought to light since mitt romney brought on paul ryan as his running mate. do you think retrospectively that could actually cost him? >> i think this is more about mitt romney than it is about paul ryan. it's always more about the principal than it is about the vice presidential candidate. that being said, when you talk to trks over the last few years, ever since paul ryan unveiled his medicare plan sever
out with politics now. you're still a republican, right? >> yes. >> but you haven't yet committed to mitt romney. why? >> well, i always wait until the last minute. and there's some very interesting debates coming up. and i think it's always nice when you see both of the candidates next to each other and debate the issues. and then you can -- >> there's a chance you could vote for president obama? >> i'm open-minded. i want to hear what everyone has to say. and i'm not one that just votes on one issue. i vote on the whole package so which one of the candidates has the best package? because no one is perfect. no one is exactly what you want. the i deal thing is if you could vote two candidates together. but that's not going to happen. so, you know, i keep an open mind. >> let's talk about the book a little bit. we asked maria shriver to comment. she has not given one to us. has she let you know what she thinks about it? >> well, i think it's very difficult, you know, obviously, for the family and the kids when this whole thing kind of gets brought back. >> then why write the book?
sounding like the professor he was before the white house. romney must come across relatable and really connect with voters. karen travers, abc news, washington. >> hmm. >> all right. >> talking about the whole style not substance. style? >> style is important. and particularly just likability, what people feel like they, they feel like they have a comfort zone with you. it's important. >> i don't think any body has prepared more so than mitt romney. expecting 50 million to 60 million eyeballs. >> how many zingers stuffed in their coat. got the zinger. bang. >> pull it out, boom. >> good sound bites coming up. >> as chris christie said. he is going to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. >> yes. >> okay. one way to put it. >> the first of three debates between the two men. really this is, the real important one. getting done to the wire. romney looking for a turnaround. this is big. >> this one is about domestic policy. the next one will be foreign policy. the third one will be a mix of both of them. so this coming wednesday, 9:00, 90 minutes. sit side by side, like two bar st
story. i get it. it affects many, many people and i wonder about the timg and when is the right time if ever to tell the details? anyway. this morning president obama and governor mitt romney are preparing for wednesday's debate in denver. their first of three debates will focus on domestic issues. a george wraesh poll release this morning shows romney as a four percentage advantage with voters while an nbc poll will show president obama will win the debate. >> a rough ride over the weekend on a jet. it was diverted after a row of passenger seats became unfwroltd the floor. the crew was alerted after takeoff. there was a concern the seats could have gone air borne within the cabin. the plane finally landed safely at new york's jfk airport. >> never seen that before. >> no. >> dairy farmers say that milk could get a lot more expensive if congress doesn't pass a new farm bill. the old farm bill expired on sunday. new york senator chuck schumer said without a new bill the government will have to pay higher than market prices for dairy products. and the national milk producer federation
